Remember when I said the Red Sox committed an organizational sin when they made the Omar Narvaez trade with the Yankees? Well… New York has already cashed in on that agreement striking big on the International bonus pool market.
It sure looks like the Narvaez trade will pay major dividends (or have a chance to). Ben Balder of Baseball America has reported the Yankees have signed international free agent Stiven Marinez to a $1.65 million deal. Just remember, this deal was not possible if Craig Breslow didn’t willingly fork over international bonus pool money to New York.
This could turn into a defining moment for the Craig Breslow regime in Boston. If you fork over International money to the Yankees, the player you’re getting back better be worth it. For Narvaez, that’s hard to say right now. He played in just four big league games last year and is more of a defensive-minded catcher. If Narvaez pans out to be a quality backup catcher, maybe it’s all worth it. Although, I’m not convinced Connor Wong is even good enough to be a starter so there’s that too. It was a huge risk to give up Kyle Teel in the Garrett Crochet trade.
IF this Marinez turns into a stud, Breslow should be thrown in jail immediately. It’s one thing to trade with the Yankees. It’s another thing to literally hand them potential studs on the international market. We’re not going to find out for several years but if Marinez pans out, Breslow needs to be thrown in prison. What’s fair is fair.
