The Red Sox finally got their guy. Garrett Crochet is on his way to Boston after the Red Sox sent four prospects to the White Sox to complete the deal. Time will tell who got the better end of this transaction, as there appears to be inherent risk on both sides. Let’s break it all down in a trade grades style format!
Red Sox: Grade C+
There is no question the Sox overpaid here. Crochet, 25, comes with just two years of control. The Sox gave up two elite prospects and two mediocre prospects to get this deal done. This price seems high and maybe would have been acceptable if an extension was in place. That, however, is not the case. No extension is part of the deal and the Sox don’t appear to be anxious to get one done.
Giving up seven years of big league control on Kyle Teel and seven years of big league control on Braden Montgomery feels like a really high price to pay all things considered. The Sox essentially gave up their 2023 and 2024 first round picks plus more to make this deal happen.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-Crochet. There are reasons why teams should have been interested. I just think they waited too long. Anybody want to bet if I was running the Sox I would have acquired him back in May for a fraction of the price?
To me, Montgomery makes this deal tough to swallow. This was a player they just drafted and profiled as a big-time bat to come. That’s not including the fact that the Sox no longer have an answer at catcher. You’re giving up serious prospect capital here. That part can’t be ignored.
The Red Sox better be right about Crochet. It’s very possible they’re buying at an all-time high. We’re talking about a guy who was a reliever two years ago. Prior to last season, the former Tennessee product has never pitched more than 55 innings in a singular campaign. We’re also talking about a guy who has faced serious injuries over his career.
What version of Crochet are the Sox actually getting? Will it be more of the same as we saw last year? In theory, Crochet should be set to just enter his prime. If the Sox get the guy who led MLB in K rate (35.1%) and K per 9 (12.88) then the high price is palatable. They just better be right. The past injury history and lack of evidence that he can be that ace starter make this a questionable deal.
White Sox: Grade B+
It wasn’t a home run deal but the Chi Sox but they did very well. Meidroth and Gonzalez are throw ins but both have potential. Meidroth is exceptional at chase rate. Gonzalez has good stuff but has just been overly erratic in the minors. No, Chicago didn’t get the top of the top of the war chest but they got two really good pieces.
Teel should be their catcher of the future with plus power. It’s still too early to say on Montgomery but he was the 12th overall pick out of Texas A&M this past year for a reason. To snag all of that for just two years of control of Crochet after successfully experimenting him as a starter, this has to be viewed as a win. Chris Getz hasn’t gotten much right but at least these are some building blocks to steady the ship for the future.
