Red Sox Commit Organizational Sin In Carlos Narvaez Trade

Red Sox Commit Organizational Sin In Carlos Narvaez Trade

After giving up Kyle Teel in the Garrett Crochet deal, Boston needed to acquire another catcher. Danny Jansen also signed with Tampa Bay in free agency so it’s thin behind the plate. The Red Sox made a trade for Carlos Narvaez to fill that void. However, in doing so, they committed a heinous sin that should get Craig Breslow thrown in jail. I’m not sure how nobody has choked him already but that’s somehow the world we live in.

Narvaez, 26, will head to Boston in exchange for minor league pitcher Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and international bonus pool money. As part of the trade, the Sox will also DFA Enmanuel Valdez to clear the necessary spot on the 40-man roster.

Many people may not see this as a big deal but they should for several reasons.

A: Under no circumstance should the Red Sox EVER give away international bonus pool money to the Yankees. Kids in the Latin America region don’t grow up dreaming to play for the Kansas City Royals. They dream about playing for the big dogs. By the way, the Yankees signed Narvaez as an international free agent on July 2, 2015.

What the Red Sox just did was give the Yankees more money to sign players just like that. The Sox signed Rafael Devers for $1.5 million on the international market. We don’t know exactly how much money the Sox handed over in this trade but under no circumstance should it be viewed as acceptable. This is how MLB teams find those diamonds in the rough. Who knows how many teenagers the Yankees just signed because of this trade but it should make every fan in Boston’s skin crawl.

To be clear, this money still belongs for the 2024 cycle so maybe Boston didn’t have any other targets in mind until the 2025 window opens up. Regardless, the point should be made clear. NEVER EVER should a rival team hand over international bonus money. Especially for a depth catcher who hasn’t done anything at the MLB level. It’s disgusting on all levels.

B: Rodriguez-Cruz didn’t rank very high in the Boston system but that’s because they currently have a much stronger farm system. He ranks 12th for the Yankees right now and is still only 21. Maybe he turns into nothing but to give up an arm like that for a depth catcher doesn’t make a lick of sense. Especially when the guy running the Sox was hired to revitalize the pitching side of the organization.

C: The Sox still haven’t solved their black hole at catcher. Kyle Teel was supposed to be that guy. Narvaez played in just three MLB games for the Yankees. It’s very possible he would have been DFA’d depending on how active they were on the free agent market. Boston still needs to sign a catcher even after this move and I’d argue Connor Wong should be a backup as it stands.

Craig Breslow belongs in prison and this trade is just another example why.
