Would Sean Payton Actually Take The Texans Job?
The Houston Texans have fired their head coach for two consecutive years. Love Smith is the one more recent to get the ax. Would a Super Bowl winning coach like Sean Payton really accept their job opening? “Absolutely” is apparently the answer. Sean Payton wants back in and he says the Texans are very much a consideration.
“It starts with ownership,” Payton said. “Generally speaking, if the quarterback is there, they’re probably a team that’s playing well. The teams that have openings – I’m not going to say are broken – but they’ve had problems, that’s why there’s an opening. So I think that element is critical.”
“It’s hard to win in this league, and it’s certainly harder to win in this league if there’s internal problems before even playing an opponent.”
“I know (Houston’s) ownership group,” he said. “We practiced against the Texans in New Orleans four of five different times, so Cal McNair (and) his late father, we’d see them. So I don’t know them well, but I know them.”
“They’ve got really good draft capital. … I think there’s growth potential immediately there from two or three wins that they had this year.”
The bigger news from this interview may be the fact that Payton leaked the Saints asking price for his services. Payton is still technically under contract with the Saints and New Orleans wants compensation if Payton gets back into coaching. It’s a hard pass for me giving up a first round pick for any coach but maybe Payton feels as though he owes it to New Orleans for the memories of winning a Super Bowl once upon a time.
