With Roy Williams Retired, Is UNC In Trouble In The ACC?
Roy Williams is just one of those coaches that is the face of the program. When you think of UNC, you would often think of Roy Williams, or Michael Jordan. While Williams did coach Kansas for 15 years in the late 80s to the early 2000s, he is more associated now with UNC, seeing how he coached there for the last 18 years. Roy Williams is now retired and that has to only hurt UNC. In his Division 1 coaching career, he did have 3 NCAA Tournament titles, the latest coming in 2017. However, only coming as close as the Sweet Sixteen since then has led him to believe that he is just not the right guy for the job anymore.
Roy Williams is sought as a basketball coach legend. Some players that UNC has recruited I’m sure only went there because of the coaching legend. With Williams out of the picture, it has to hurt UNC greatly. I just can’t imagine the same amount of talent will be going there despite its reputation as one of the best basketball schools in the country. That was true when the great Michael Jordan went there. However, Williams leaves a void that might be too big to replace. Sure, someone, a great established coach, will take the UNC job, but how many current coaches are as good as Williams? That’s the problem, there’s a select few that could fill that void.
This isn’t to say that UNC won’t get great talent, that they won’t compete. But at this time, I can’t see them making too many NCAA Tournaments or making any noise in any of them for a while. While the ACC wasn’t that good of a conference this year, it is a respected conference with plenty of competition. How well does UNC stack up against the rest of the teams in the conference without Roy Williams? That remains to be seen. We will know more about how well UNC will do without Williams when they hire a head coach.
