Willy Adames Is The Worst Buy On The Free Agent Market

I’m not entirely sure how to set the stage for this post other than by coming right out and saying it. I can’t believe somebody gave Willy Adames the type of contract the Giants did. Adames sure feels like the single worst buy on the free agent market and it’s likely going to be a contract the Giants regret.

The Dodgers were one team who was already been reported as a serious suitor before the Giants ultimately landed him. It should speak volumes that Andrew Friedman, who knew Adames well during his time with the Rays, was okay with being outbid here by a division rival. My mind is blown that someone went to these lengths to land Adames.

Fun fact!

Did you know that Adames is now the richest contract ever handed out by the San Francisco Giants?

The previous mark was held by Buster Posey, who interestingly enough is the man responsible for signing him after landing the GM job in San Fran.

I just would have thought that Posey would have put his name behind an actual superstar if he was going to hand out this type of contract. The idea that Adames is a superstar is a totally laughable concept.

Adames, 29, is coming off a career best season. 153 hits, 32 homers, 112 RBIs, and 21 steals are all career highs. Oddly enough coming in a contract year. Weird how that works…

Sorry, not sorry, but this a horrible investment. Adames had 21 steals last year. He’s never had even a double-digit steal season in any other season of his life.

He’s never hit the 100 RBI mark in any other season.

He’s had ONE other season where he hit the 30 home run mark.

ONE season ago he hit .217.

Even in a career best season, he’s one of the worst hitters in the league at creating contact. Again, in the best season of his life, Adames ranked in the 12th percentile in Squared-Up%, 21st percentile in whiff rate, and 28th percentile in strikeout% among all hitters in MLB.

How do you think that’s going to play out as he enters his 30’s? It’s not a bet I’d be willing to make. Not for the outrageous price tag he signed for.

Max Fried, in my opinion, represents one of the safest buys on the pitching market, Willy Adames sure feels like the complete opposite for all of the reasons we just went over.

This Adames deal is easily the worst contract handed out all Winter and I can’t fathom a single MLB team did this. Please bookmark this post and get back to me in three years. This won’t end well.
