Giants fire president Farhan Zaidi, hire Buster Posey

The San Francisco Giants fired president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi Monday, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan first reported.

As a result, according to Giants beat writer Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, former longtime Giants catcher Buster Posey is expected to take over in the new role.

Zaidi spent six years with the organization after four seasons as general manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers and three years with the Oakland Athletics organization. He was hired by San Francisco in November of 2018, with the team making the postseason just once in his tenure.

The news of Zaidi’s departure–and replacement–shouldn’t come as a big surprise. In September of 2022, the Giants formally announced that Posey joined the 30-member ownership group with the organization, which he’s held since. Though according to Andrew Baggerly of The Athletic, the Giants’ six-year extension with Matt Chapman was primarily negotiated by Posey–not Zaidi–due to the “lack of immediate progress between Zaidi and agent Scott Boras after talks began in August that the ownership group took action.”

“Although sources who characterized the Chapman discussions described impatience with Zaidi, Posey’s direct involvement also allowed the front office to cut through any perceived interference from Boras, who continued to advise Chapman that the Giants’ offer would serve as a potential floor on the open market this winter,” Baggerly wrote in mid-September. “Zaidi, as the club’s chief baseball officer, did not have the same latitude to circumvent Boras and deal directly with Chapman.”

If your own ownership does not trust you to probably execute your job, the writing on the wall is already complete. Even though Zaidi patiently waited for Chapman and Blake Snell to sign for reasonable price tags in the offseason, there’s no going back–especially after missing the postseason five times in six years in one of the bigger markets in baseball.
