Will Zalatoris out for season after back surgery

After withdrawing from the 2023 Masters tournament, young golf phenom Will Zalatoris will undergo back surgery and miss the rest of his season, he announced on social media Monday.

“After careful consideration and seeking multiple medical opinions, I underwent a successful microdiscectomy on Saturday. As much as I hate not being able to play the rest of the season, I am happy that I am already seeing the benefits of the procedure. Playing and living in pain is not fun,” Zalatoris said. “I look forward to making a full recovery and seeing everyone in the fall. Thank you to Dr. Michael Duffy, Dr. Tom Kelton, and their respective teams for getting me fixed. And, of course, thank you to everyone for the support and the messages. I took forward to getting back to 100%.”

Zalatoris will look to make a full recovery, as he is one of the top candidates for the United States in the Presidents Cup in September.

Zalatoris has dwindled with injuries in his short PGA TOUR career. The young PGA TOUR star suffered two herniated discs last August shortly after he earned his first PGA TOUR victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He eventually withdrew from the BMW Championship and miss the remainder of the year as well.

“We spent a lot of time understanding the pressures on my golf swing and understanding how I push off my right side,” Zalatoris said in January at the Sentry Tournament of Champions via press release. “I do it later than a lot of guys, so what that does for someone with a lot of side bend is that gets my right hip high and my spine is tilted back, and so as Dr. (Greg) Rose said, ‘Duh, no wonder I had a back issue.’”

Now, the young long-hitting star has a microdiscectomy, which is a surgical procedure to help pain from a herniated disc and spine press on an adjacent nerve. One other golfer who has dealt with this in the past is Tiger Woods.
