Will Lonnie Walker Make The Celtics Roster?

It turns out that even after signing Lonnie Walker, he’s no lock to actually make the Celtics roster. Apparently, it’s possible that Walker gets waived so that the Celtics can keep that 15th spot open. The former Miami product will need a strong camp to lock down that final roster spot.

Walker, 25, was the 18th pick of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Spurs. He’s coming off a strong season in Brooklyn where he shot over 38% from three. His defense has also improved greatly over the last few years. On paper, keeping Walker seems like an easy call.

Except the Celtics are way over the tax and may not keep Walker unless he blows them away in camp. Part of the Exhibit 10 deal he signed allows the Celtics to stash Walker in Maine and can sign him back to the active roster later in the season if they so choose.

This is the problem I have with that strategy, if the Celtics do part with Walker. He gives the Celtics something they currently don’t have. An off the bench scorer who can create his own shot while playing a wing spot.

Sam Hauser is a catch and shoot guy. Payton Pritchard is the third point guard. Xavier Tillman is a poor man’s Draymond. Baylor Scheierman is a rookie and will likely be the next Hauser. Even Jaden Springer can’t create his own offense. He’s on the team for his defense. For as good as Boston is, they don’t have one guy who can spark offense off the bench. Keeping Walker to fill that role just makes way too much sense.

If the Celtics are actually worried about the tax and only want to carry 14 players, how about we start by cutting the cord on the Jordan Walsh experiment? That puppy is deader than dead. It’s never going to happen for him. Let’s start by getting rid Walsh if they actually want to make cuts.
