Will Jimmy Garoppolo return to San Francisco in 2022?

Will Jimmy Garoppolo return to San Francisco in 2022? As we know, the San Francisco 49’rs have been eliminated as Super Bowl contenders, So what does that mean for Jimmy Garoppolo? If I was in his position, a trip to the Super Bowl just might solidify my position as the starting quarterback. However, he did not do that and Trey Lance will be back for the 2022 season. The 49ers drafted Lance for one reason, to have a young talented quarterback lead the team for the coming years. For Garoppolo, that means he loses his starting position and possibly even his spot on the roster.

Garoppolo’s Career

Let’s talk about how Garoppolo ended up in this position. Jimmy G was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2014 in the second round, pick 62. He played with the Patriots until 2017 when he was traded to San Francisco. Since then, he produced a record of 31-14. On top of that, he helped lead the 49ers to Super Bowl 54. Garoppolo is not a rookie quarterback and has put up numbers that reflect a fairly decent level of play. So why is his position as starter up in the air?

The reason is simple. When Trey Lance returns, the 49ers plan on using him as their starter. As the game of football evolves, there is more of a need for young mobile quarterbacks. We are starting to see more activity outside the pocket from quarterbacks and it’s not clear if Garoppolo has that ability. Teams around the league are making the switch and finding agile playmakers for the QB position. Players like Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, and Justin Fields are emerging in the league, and all share one common trait. They are young, fast, and quick.

This does not mean that Garoppolo is a bad quarterback, however, what it does mean is that the league is changing and he must change with it. His longevity in San Francisco is definitely in question. Will we see him sporting the red and gold in 2022? Or will he make an appearance on another team? Only time will tell.
