Will Chris Paul Accept His Player Option for 2021-22?

Will Chris Paul Stay In Phoenix?

Last night, the Phoenix Suns fell to the now-champion Milwaukee Bucks in a series-clinching Game 6. It was Chris Paul’s first-ever appearance in the NBA Finals. Prior to this, he had made nine All-NBA Teams and nine All-Defensive Teams, probably the most accomplished career without a Finals appearance up to that point other than Steve Nash. Something about these Phoenix point guards, man.

Chris Paul performed well in the 2021 NBA Finals, finishing with averages of 21.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game. He shot an efficient 55% from the field and 52% from three-point range. The 36-year-old may be unfairly labeled a “choker” now that the series is over, but don’t listen to those takes. He played well.

Will Chris Paul Stick Around? Probably.

Now, the questions start. CP3 has a $44M player option for the 2021-22 season from his contract originally signed with the Houston Rockets. The deadline for him to accept his option is August 1. Is there any reason to believe that Paul might decline the option? I don’t think so, but it’s still something to keep an eye on. For one, I don’t know that a 36-year-old point guard would command more than $44M on the open market. Plus, it seems like Chris Paul genuinely enjoys playing in Phoenix. He is coming off one of the most efficient seasons of his career, almost finishing with a 50/40/90 line.

The money is right. With a young team fresh off an NBA Finals run and great head coach in Monty Williams, the situation is also right. With the information we have now, it looks like Chris Paul will run it back with the Suns. We will know for certain in the next couple weeks.
