Stay Away From Marquise Brown in 2021 Fantasy

Marquise Brown enters his third season for the Baltimore Ravens this year. When the Ravens took Brown in the first round in the 2019 draft, I loved the pick, but he has severely underperformed. Looking back on the draft, I find it funny how the two first-round receivers in Marquise Brown and N’Keal Harry stink, while a number of receivers taken after them have become stars in the NFL.

Brown finished as the WR36 in PPR leagues averaging 11.4 points per game. The additions of Sammy Watkins and Rashod Bateman paired with the Ravens run-heavy offense makes me worry about Marquise Brown’s ability to consistently produce in 2021 fantasy.

Brown had 58 receptions, 769 yards, and eight touchdowns in 2020, but every time I watched Ravens games, “Hollywood” had numerous drops and had a hard time getting consistently open. Brown only had one 100-yard game in the regular season and the most receptions he had in one game was six. The Ravens wide receiver depth has been a question over the years, but they brought in Sammy Watkins, drafted Rashod Bateman in the first round, and Devin Duvernay has earned some targets. We also cannot forget about Mark Andrews. Browns’ targets and receptions are going to decline in 2021.

The Ravens’ offense embodies the term “run-heavy”. Lamar Jackson is an elite athlete, J.K. Dobbins looks like an up-and-coming star and their offensive line play is solid. The Ravens had the highest rush rate in the entire league, calling a run play on 55% of their offensive plays. Lamar Jackson also had the lowest passing yards per game average in 2020 and on the whole, this offense just does not pass the ball that much.

Personally, I have fallen into the Marquise Brown trap every year. I thought he would have a breakout year in his first two seasons and both times it has come back to bite me in the ass. I am not falling for it in 2021. I am sure Brown will have two of three huge fantasy games this year, but I do not see him consistently producing week to week.
