What comes to mind when you think of the name Blaine Gabbert? Some might say he’s just a backup while others might say he has the potential to be a starter.
Well, according to the Super Bowl-champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht, the organization likes what he has to offer.
Licht was on the Pewter Report podcast this past Thursday where he discussed the possibilities of Blaine Gabbert being the heir to the throne of Tom Brady, and the GM gushed on his affection for Gabbert.
Licht had this to say on the Pewter Report podcast:
“First of all, I love his energy…I’ve really gotten close to Blaine this year just being on the sidelines. He’s a really smart guy but he is one guy, my scouts and I talk about this a lot, he’s just one guy that I love to watch throw every day in practice because he has got a cannon.”
Despite all of this conjecture, Gabbert only saw the field four times this year, during which he was 9 of 16 for 143 yards and two touchdowns.
I’m not so sure why the organization or at least Licht claim Gabbert to be a shining star, but if Tampa Bay really does believe that then they need to make sure they sign him right away. Gabbert will become a free agent in March, and the asking price will only be higher, as Gabbert is a Super Bowl champion after all.
While Tom Brady clearly has not lost too much of his swagger at age 43, there is no denying that he can walk away from the game now anytime he wants. That may happen in a month, a year, maybe even three years from now. Regardless, Blaine Gabbert appears to have the confidence of the front offices in Tampa Bay, and Licht also stated, “I’m not going to rule anything out right now.”
If Tom Brady can win the big game against the daunting Kansas City Chiefs team, who’s to say Blaine Gabbert can’t do the same?
