Why I Usually Don’t Publish My Own NFL Mock Draft

Welcome to lying szn. There are no games being played right now. Yet, the stretch between the college All-Star games and the Combine, you will hear people say “player x is falling down the board”. “player y is rising up boards”. It’s all lies and politics all stemming from cancerous NFL Mock Draft culture.

Don’t get me wrong. NFL Mock drafts are fun to look at and good for clicks. They’re also a total waste of time.

I usually don’t publish my own mock draft for that very reason. The people who publish multiple mock drafts do it for one reason. It’s follow the leader culture. Person X has player Y here? Maybe I should change my mock too!

That’s all these people do. It’s why players move up and down the board. Follow the leader based on lies!

There are two ways to do a mock draft:

A: Projecting what the team will do.

B: Proclaiming what you would do if you were the GM of every team.

Nobody does a mock draft based on B. The truth of the matter is, 99% of NFL fans don’t have a relevant opinion in terms of projecting what teams will do.

You’re not in the war room and unless you have an idea of what each front office believes from a philosophical perspective, you’re wasting your time.

Here is a perfect example and we’ll use him because he’s no longer in the league after the Jags fired him. Trent Baalke was a height, weight, speed GM. Baalke values traits over production. Sometimes it works out (the Brian Thomas pick). Sometimes it doesn’t (Travon Walker over Aidan Hutchinson).

Unless you know how the GM of that specific team operates, you’re wasting your time listening to any of these mock drafts. That’s just the truth.

By the way, is there anything more embarrassing than doing a podcast talking about someone else’s mock draft? If you see someone do that, it’s the first sign that they are in follow the leader mode and don’t have a real educated opinion to provide you the viewer. Do not take those people seriously.
