The Rams claimed Emmanuel Forbes after the Commanders cut him and Sean McVay is a very happy man. The Rams head coach was apparently shocked that the team landed Forbes. Mostly because he was pretty convinced another team with a worse record who was higher in the waiver wire order would claim him first.
“I didn’t actually think we would get him because of where we’re at in the claim order, so we were pleased that we were able to get him,” McVay said. “We’ll add him to the mix, we’ll get to know him and we’ll see where he fits. But that was kind of a simple thing that came to fruition.”
The only downside of claiming Forbes is the fact that the Rams now are on the hook for the 5th year option. Not that they are necessarily obligated to pick it up but it’s hard to get a next contract done when you’re forced to waive the player again first.
Otherwise, this is a really smart gamble by the Rams. They need cornerback help in the worst way. Forbes had interception production in college. The ball skills are there. The size and lack of instincts haven’t been. He will never be better than a guy like Christian Gonzalez who the dummy Commanders thought but there could still be a good player inside there somewhere. Also, the Rams have essentially no real secondary talent so they need to be conducting these kinds of experiments.
