Why the Philadelphia Eagles will win Super Bowl LVII

The Eagles find themselves one game away from securing their second Super Bowl in the last five years. It’s been a relatively easy road for this team but to say they don’t belong here would be simply wrong. They are one of the most complete rosters in the league and are led by breakout quarterback Jalen Hurts. But the Eagles will certainly have their hands full in trying to dethrone Patrick Mahomes and this emerging Chiefs dynasty. Despite this, in this article, I will attempt to show why the Eagles will emerge victorious in this year’s Super Bowl.

Depth wins championships

The old adage that “defense wins championships” still reigns true, and the Eagles have a great one. But I think the oftentimes forgotten aspect of an elite defense is the depth you need. Football is a sport where you will have to deal with an abundance of injuries. Players drop like flies sometimes and while having top-end talent is surely beneficial, having guys that come in and fill that void is arguably just as valuable.

The Eagles have perfectly demonstrated why depth is so important for a defensive unit. Look no further than the defensive line. The Eagles don’t just have a couple of guys who can rush the passer. They have two units of guys who are all able to get to the passer. They became the first team to have four players with 10 or more sacks and this very unit was single handily at times able to get this team wins.

The depth this Eagles roster has been able to accumulate is a big reason why the Eagles find themselves where they are. It was the same for this very Eagles team in 2018 who followed this very same strategy of relying on depth. This defense will have its work cut out for them. But if enough players can step up and play a role, then Philadelphia should be able to get the job done.

Jalen Hurts is a natural-born leader

One of the biggest advantages people are citing for the Chiefs is the experience gap between Mahomes and Hurts. It’s a very fair point. Mahomes has already played in two Super Bowls, winning one, and overall, has much more playoff experience than Hurts. While this certainly is something to take note of, I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. That’s, in my opinion at least, due to the natural leadership Hurts shows.

Anytime an Eagles player talks about Hurts all they can do is talk about the leadership he’s shown from the jump. He carries himself as well as any other player in the league and it’s clear that his parents made some great decisions in parenting him. So yes, he may be the inexperienced quarterback in this game. But I don’t think that will really affect Hurts too much. He knows what needs to be done and will have his guys ready come Sunday.

It’s because of this I don’t feel the experience gap is as significant as people may think.

This Eagles offense is too complex to contain

Now, we’ve talked about how impressive this Eagles defense is. But equally as impressive has been this Eagles’ offense. It’s a unit that ranked top-three in both yards per game and points per game during the 2022 season. Still, the thing that makes this offense so difficult to contain is the different ways they can beat you.

It’s a unit that ranked top-10 in passing yards per game and top-five in rushing yards per game. Throughout the season we saw the different ways the Eagles can beat you. One week they may rely on the run game and rush for over 200 yards; the next week they may rely more on Hurts and let him throw for 300 yards and four touchdowns; then another week it may be the defense stepping up and giving the offense an off week.

Shane Steichen has done an amazing job with this offense and I don’t expect that to change this Sunday.

There are so many different playmakers the Eagles can rely on, and I don’t think the Chiefs have the defensive personnel to effectively neutralize this unit. Especially with a secondary that is riddled with injuries and is relying on a lot of inexperienced players. I expect the Eagles to take advantage of this, which should bode well for A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

The Prediction

Trying to predict this game just seems like a crapshoot. I mean the line is at Philadelphia -1.5 for a reason. Nobody, not even Vegas, really knows what is going to happen here.

The Eagles top to bottom have the better roster, but the Chiefs have the top-end talent. They also have a cheat code by the name of Patrick Mahomes who has the ability to mask other weaknesses on your roster.

I think it will be a close game, but I think the Eagles will do just enough to pull out the win. It’s going to take everything they have but I just don’t think Mahomes will be able to make up for the weaknesses on this defense. But really you could flip a coin and let it decide who you think will win.

Eagles win 31-28
