Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer still has not named a starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season, which is just a few weeks away. He said he would after this weekend’s preseason action, but why is he pretending like Trevor Lawrence won’t be the starter? The way Meyer is going about this whole thing, you would think that Lawrence was just some scrub who legitimately can’t beat out Gardner Minshew for the starting job. Realistically, Trevor Lawrence became the starter in Jacksonville the second the Jaguars found out they were getting the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
I don’t know what Urban Meyer stands to gain from acting like there’s some grand competition going on down in Jacksonville. Trevor Lawrence is one of, if not the greatest quarterback prospect there has ever been. Gardner Minshew was great for the franchise, but he isn’t the guy going forward, and he knows that. The only conceivable reason why Meyer is being so coy about this is that he wants to raise Minshew’s trade value. Maybe? In that case, why wouldn’t you keep Minshew around as a backup? I trust him more than C.J. Beathard and Jake Luton.
The way Urban Meyer is handling the quarterback situation is so ridiculous to me, because there isn’t even a situation that needs handling. Trevor Lawrence is the guy. End of story.
