With the Chicago Bears dropping another game and falling to 5-3, there haven’t been many bright spots on the Bears offense. One of the very few bright spots on the offense has been David Montgomery, the young talented running back. David Montgomery is underrated and has been for a while. With nearly 900 yards and six touchdowns behind a poor offensive line, Montgomery impressed all of Chicago.

Poor Offensive Line Play

According to football outsiders, the Bears had the 29th ranked offensive line last year. The Bears averaged 3.56 yards a carry for the rush in 2019, which was .7 less than the league average. Therefore it was tough to get any progress on the ground for Chicago, but Montgomery made it work. It makes it difficult to run around people with a poor offensive line, so Montgomery needs to go through the defense.

Breaking Tackles

David Montgomery is underrated with the way he breaks so many tackles. As a rookie, Montgomery broke 28 tackles tied for sixth in the NFL. Behind a terrible line, he was able to succeed with 889 yards and six touchdowns. He is also averaging 9.9 yards on runs where he broke a tackle last year. This season Montgomery is number one in the NFL after Week 8 with 16 broken tackles. Montgomery is on track for 32 broken tackles, which would be tied for number one last year.

David Montgomery Is Underrated Reasoning

By breaking so many tackles, David Montgomery is proving to Chicago and the entire NFL that he can be a top back and producer if he gets an offensive line. With nearly 900 yards behind a terrible line and being on pace for about the same, all Montgomery needs is average blocking, and he will be a top back in the NFL.
