Is Jimmy Garoppolo Still The Answer For The 49ers?

Jimmy Garoppolo has been the 49ers starting quarterback since 2017, and in that time, San Francisco has made it to one Super Bowl and two NFC Championship games. But is he the answer to the franchise’s issues?

Jimmy Garoppolo is Hurting the 49ers

The problem is Jimmy G had little to nothing to do with it. Jimmy is a game manager; that’s all head coach Kyle Shanahan asks of him. Shanahan has turned the 49ers into a run the ball down your throat type of team. Paired with a good defense, it was enough for them to get to the Super Bowl in 2019.

However, 2020 has not been so kind to the 49ers. A laundry list of significant injuries has rendered the defense to a shell of its former self. The offense, as well, has sustained a ton of injuries in which it seems they will not be able to overcome. But, Jimmy G, when he is not hurt, has played subpar this year at best.

Jimmy Garoppolo Had Yet Another Horrible Game.

On Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, Jimmy G looked awful. Jimmy had completed 11 of 16 passes for 84 yards and a pick. While his back-up Nick Mullens, who came in after Jimmy reinjured his ankle, passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns in just one quarter.

Seattle has the worst statistical defense in the NFL. And Jimmy G looked lost out there. The offense was totally out of synch; they had no rhythm and couldn’t muster anything until Jimmy took a seat. Mullens immediately was able to take advantage of Seattle’s terrible defense. Mullens was able to make the final score look a lot closer than the game was.

Jimmy G Has Played This Bad Before

We don’t have to harp on this game, however. Do you want to say it was just one bad game? Well, allow me to explain two weeks ago when the 49ers get blasted by Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins. Jimmy was so atrocious he got benched midway through the game.

Now give some credit to Miami; they have been playing incredibly well. However, for Jimmy and the 49ers offense to be so egregious against a team they should beat is just unacceptable. Mullens is not the answer for the 49ers. But they should keep their eye on the QB class in college because Jimmy G isn’t the answer either.

Nevertheless, this is a lost season for the 49ers. They should seriously consider drafting a quarterback and find their franchise guy. While the defense, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel, are young and emerging. It is best to go in a different direction at quarterback.
