Should the Bears keep Justin Fields? Why the answer is obviously no. Fans are asking the wrong question here… (Mike Dinovo-USA TODAY Sports)

Why The Bears Obviously Have To Move On From Justin Fields

Griff recently did a really well-crafted post about how the Bears need to select Marvin Harrison Jr. with the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. His logic is reasonable. The Ohio State receiver is the best overall player in the class. No argument there. However, Griff never once asked the important question that needs to be asked. Justin Fields might not be the problem in Chicago, but is he worth $40-$50 million per year?

Nothing is more important than that question. That question right there should dictate what the Bears do in the draft. Paying Fields a contract he’s not worth would put them exactly where the New York Giants are right now. Screwed while paying Daniel Jones a contract he’s not worth.

Daniel Jones got $40 million per year. What’s Fields worth?

You see, Fields isn’t the problem but you also can’t pay him market value on his second contract. It’s organizational suicide. Not when you have a free out to reset the quarterback contract. Not when Caleb Williams is staring you in the face and you cash in Fields for a second round pick. Not when you have your own pick on top of Carolina’s to further enhance the roster. Not when you have over $60 million in cap space to use this offseason.

Finding a quarterback is only half the battle. Figuring out who to pay is the real battle. Fields is improving and I’ve been a fan since he came out of Ohio State. He’s just not nearly good enough of a passer to commit that kind of money to. Not when you have a generational quarterback prospect staring you in the face.

Caleb Williams is the only option for Chicago. The odds are that Ryan Poles will screw it up because that guy is dumb as rocks.
