Who Wins The Chiefs LT Battle? Kingsley Suamataia Or Wanya Morris?

The defending champs have an important position battle that could go a long way in determining if the three peat is on the table for the Kansas City Chiefs. Who is going to win the starting job at left tackle? Last season, veteran Donovan Smith handled that role. This year, the Chiefs LT battle will be determined by Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris.

VIA PFT:

“If I do get the opportunity to be his blindside [blocker], that would mean the world to me,” Suamataia said, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. I can’t wait to be Patty Mahomes’ left-hand man or right-hand man. Whatever one he needs, I’m just ready to go.”

“In the middle of the season he got an opportunity there [with] some good, some bad,” General Manager Brett Veach said of Morris. “If you look at his body of work last year, I think on one end you’re happy that he was able to come in at the pro level and be competitive. It wasn’t perfect, but it also was solid play that I think is a good foundation to build and grow on.”

Morris, a third round pick last year, started four games at left tackle for the Chiefs as a rookie. In those 339 snaps, Morris allowed two sacks and three penalties. It wasn’t overly pretty but it rarely is for rookie linemen. The bad news is Morris put himself further behind the eight ball and he just got arrested for weed charges (I have no idea how you do that anymore with laws changing but it happened).

Suamataia, a second round pick this year, comes in with mountains of potential but is still fairly raw. Has a ton of athletic traits but is still very young and needs to keep developing. For those who have read our draft coverage (the draft profile for Kingsley is found in the embed), you know how high I am on this player. He should win the job. It’s a matter of when.
