What’s stopping the Suns from being good? I mean honestly, I’ve never been big on the Suns, but I really like their squad. I think it’s one of the best squads they’ve had in years and one of the better coaches they’ve had with Monty Williams. So what’s the holdup? When the Suns surprised the league but winning a majority of their first couple of games and looking competitive against the best teams in the NBA, I thought they were legit. Since then, they’ve fallen off considerably.
There’s at least one known problem I can name for the Suns. After Ricky Rubio and Devin Booker, who else are the Suns going to put at guard? When it comes to the bench, they’re missing a ball handler to actually lead the bench. Without looking it up, I bet you couldn’t name me their guards on their bench. I know because I sure couldn’t. That is a DIRE need for this Suns team.
However, I like the rest of this squad. Their starting lineup of Rubio, Booker, Oubre, Saric, and Ayton seems to be solid. Their bench frontcourt of Kaminsky and Aron Baynes is formidable. Cam Johnson and Mikal Bridges aren’t the worse things I’ve seen on a bench. But it seems an improvement could be made there as well.
All in all, I’m not sure what the hold up is. Ayton is back and should elevate their game, Booker is still one of the best scorers in the game. There’s no reason why this team cannot make the playoffs. This is the year to do it too. The Western Conference is as top-heavy as it’s been in a while. Even with the Suns .389 winning percentage, the Suns are only a game and a half out of 8th place. It’s not like they won’t have competition though. San Antonio is figuring themselves out, the Blazers should as well. The Kings and the Wolves aren’t the worse teams I’ve seen either. If the Suns are really going to take their playoff chance seriously, the time to win is now. Stop beating around the bush Phoenix, just go out and win games already.
