Whatever The Stars Are Paying Joe McDonnell, It Isn’t Enough

Some general managers in sports are truly supreme commanders. Every decision that gets made goes through them. Then there are others who lean hard on their staff and those people never get credit for some of the heroic decisions that are made. Stars executive Joe McDonnell has entered the chat because whatever Dallas is paying him isn’t enough.

On a recent episode of the Spittin Chiclets pod, Stars GM Jim Nill appeared on the show. He sort of let the cat out of the bag in terms of who the hell is responsible for nailing all of their draft picks.

Just incredible insight right there ^. All I know is McDonnell should never have to pay for a drink in Dallas as long as he’s alive. Talk about an absolute stroke of genius. It’s one thing to trade down and select stud Wyatt Johnston. It’s another to use the trade down pick on Logan Stankoven.

Let’s be real about it. The Stars aren’t good because they’ve made these shiny free-agent signings or big-time trades. The core of that team is made up of ALL draft picks. It goes far beyond just Johnston and Stankoven. In 2017 alone, Dallas snagged Miro Heiskanan, Jake Oettinger, and Jason Roberton… IN THE SAME DRAFT (something I wrote about previously).

99% of the people that watch the Stars probably has no idea how gift wrapped the good players on their team via the draft. All I’m saying is that guy deserves a few tire pumps because he’s clearly educated on what he’s doing. If a team was smart, they would figure out what the Stars are paying him and try to double his salary to steal him away.
