Yesterday was a whirlwind of emotions for Pittsburgh Steelers fans, as in the morning word had come out that the team called the Jacksonville Jaguars and inquired about quarterback Trevor Lawrence, per Ryan Burr of the Big Ten Network. This turned the NFL world into a frenzy, with *most* of the Steelers faithful clamoring over the possibility of landing a quarterback the caliber of Lawrence. Unfortunately, this was a very short-lived rumor.
Michael DiRocco, who writes about the Jaguars for ESPN had this to say on the Trevor Lawrence to Pittsburgh rumor, VIA PFT/NBCSports.com:
Regarding recent report that Steelers have inquired about a trade for Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence, a Jaguars source said there’s ‘no chance’ they’ll trade Lawrence and called the idea ‘ridiculous.’”
That’s fine. It’s fair. It’s not surprising. It’s also not binding on the Jaguars. While it’s stronger than the oft-used “no intention to trade” a given player (which often is followed by a trade), it’s also something from which the Jaguars could deviate, if they get an offer they won’t refuse.
Maybe this is a topic for another time, but this 100% is the wrong move for the Pittsburgh Steelers to make. Yes, it does technically show they are at least trying to be in the quarterback market for real, however, you cannot spend a first and second-round pick in this class, especially with this team not being close. Realistically, you re-sign Justin Fields, who never should have been benched in the first place, and throw a dart on day three on a quarterback in the draft. I am still in on Trevor Lawrence, but this is not the move the Steelers should make.
