The Red Sox won the Garrett Crochet sweepstakes but they obviously weren’t alone in the bidding. The Mets made a play for the ace lefty and now we know what the asking price would have been. Get ready Met fans because it’s a whopper.
The NY Post’s Mike Puma reported Brandon Sproat was going to be the headliner of a four-prospect package. The Post lists out in their article that it would have looked something like Jett Williams, Luisangel Acuna, Marco Vargas, and Don Hamel.
That…
Is…
A lot…
The Red Sox certainly overpaid and you can see why the Mets didn’t go further down this road. If Dave Dombrowski thinks you overpaid, then you overpaid. I can’t remember the last time Dombrowski felt like it was too risky to trade that level of prospect haul but that’s exactly how he felt about that trade. It should tell you everything you need to know.
Good news if you’re a Mets fan and you wanted Crochet. You may have your chance two years from now. It appears that the Red Sox are screwing around on the extension part of the deal in the aftermath of everything. A big mistake if you’re going to give up all that prospect capital via trade. If Crochet really establishes himself as an ace, the Mets have Steve Cohen’s wallet on their side. Something the Red Sox I guess don’t get right now. Maybe they will when it’s too late.
