Garrett Crochet: What’s the Roadmap For A Possible Extension?

The Red Sox landed Garrett Crochet from the White Sox, but one hurdle still remains. Boston only has two remaining years of control on the left-handed starter. Based on the prospect capital they gave up, the front office sure as hell better find a way to keep him around for longer than two years. Can the Sox extend him and what does the roadmap look like in doing so?

MassLive’s Sean McAdam reported the following if Boston were to pursue an extension with Crochet:

“It’s reasonable to expect that the Sox will have to give Crochet somewhere between $25 million and $30 million in average annual value, because that’s the going rate for an ace, or a potential ace,”.

Not an outrageous price tag. If anything, that’s something the Sox should jump on now. If they truly believe in the player, that price tag will only go up the more years he dominates as a starter.

Except there is no forward thinking in the Red Sox organization. As of right now, they aren’t even trying to extend the player.

I continue to not understand why nobody has choked Breslow. You can’t give up the kind of prospect capital the Red Sox did and not get an extension done. It’s absolutely criminal. Can you imagine the Sox letting Crochet walk in two years after giving up Braden Montgomery and Kyle Teel? What an awful sin that would be.

I’m not sure what the Sox are waiting for. You can’t give up that type of prospect capital and not get the player extended. It’s absolutely gross on all level. What the Red Sox lack is a supreme commander. This organization continues to fail on anything that has to do with forward thinking.

The longer the Sox wait, the more the price tag goes up. The only way it doesn’t is it they were wrong about the player. Let’s hope that this team gets some common sense and gets an extension done before the start of the 2025 MLB Season.
