Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ‘Would Love’ To Sign With Red Sox

I have no idea what the Blue Jays are doing but time is ticking. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025 MLB Season. The two sides are talking about an extension but remain far apart.

Plus, they have two things currently working against them.

A: The team stinks and wasn’t close to a playoff spot last year.

B: Canadian taxes suck and no player wants to fork over half their salary to the Canadian government.

If and when Vlad Jr. reaches free agency, a rumor has surfaced that he prefers to sign with the Boston Red Sox.

VIA USA Today’s Bob Nightengale: (I’m very aware Bob isn’t the most trusted reporter out there for several reasons but this report sure makes a lot of sense)

“This is the final year before Vladimir Guerrero and Bo Bichette leave town as free agents.”

“Guerrero and the Blue Jays are at least $100 million apart, with Guerrero seeking at least $450 million.”

“If Guerrero doesn’t receive an extension by spring training, he’ll test free agency. If Guerrero doesn’t return to the Blue Jays, he would love to be with the Red Sox, friends say, which may be why the Red Sox are hesitant in their pursuit of Bregman.”

Acquiring Vlad Jr. makes all the sense in the world for the Sox. It’s something I’ve been advocating for a decent amount of time now. The Red Sox need a right-handed power bat in the worst way. Also, you then have a three person trio of Rafael Devers, Triston Casas, and Vlad to occupy third base, first base, and DH. That’s a hell of a trio to occupy those three spots with Vlad being the necessary righty in that group.

The only thing I’d add is I’m not sure why that makes the Red Sox hesitant to sign Alex Bregman. They’re having an internal war over that matter as we speak. From the way I see it, Bregman should play second base. That wouldn’t impact Vlad Jr. at all.

If the Red Sox were smart, they would be calling Mark Shapiro every 15 minutes to get a trade and extension worked out. Although, with Craig Breslow, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
