The Red Sox Are Divided On Whether To Pursue Alex Bregman In Free Agency

We’re in the midst of the Winter Meetings and free agents are flying off the board. The Red Sox are empty handed once again leaving their fans with major blue balls. Sorry, that’s a lie. They did sign Aroldis Chapman. In classic Red Sox fashion, their big move this offseason thus far is signing a player the entire fan base hates for reasons that I don’t need to say. Things are so bad that an internal Civil War is brewing regarding Alex Bregman.

Alex Cora recently spoke glowingly of Bregman and clearly wants to bring him to Fenway Park. Craig Breslow disagrees and doesn’t appear to be overly interested.

Sean McAdam of Mass Live had the story:

“But Boston’s pursuit, according to an industry source, is somewhat complicated by some internal disagreement over Bregman. While manager Alex Cora and team president Sam Kennedy are known to be big proponents of Bregman, the source said some members of the baseball operations staff, including chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, are more circumspect when it comes to the player.”

“It’s unknown why Breslow and others are less enthusiastic about Bregman, though it’s logical to believe it has something to do with the dip in his offensive production in recent years. From 2018 through 2022, Bregman averaged an OPS of .891, but over the last two seasons, his OPS has declined, with an .804 figure in 2023 followed by a .768 OPS in 2024.”

“Interestingly, there are people in the Red Sox organization who believe Bregman is likely to stay with the Astros, while some prominent Astros folks think he’ll end up with the Red Sox.”

The biggest problem with the Red Sox is that they lack leadership. When you’re not aligned, nonsense like this happens. Also, I have no idea why Sam’s opinion matters here but it’s also not surprising given the nature of the news. Just an unbelievably poor look for the Sox. We’ll see if Boston ultimately lands Bregman. Although, I wouldn’t count on it based on this report.
