Vic Fangio is touted as one of the greatest defensive minds in the NFL. When he was the head coach of the Denver Broncos, that might have been the case, but now that we are four games into the 2023 NFL season, things are not looking good for the Miami Dolphins defense.
Look at these stats. This is not the type of stats that a team that’s trying to win the Super Bowl should have. In Week 4 against the Buffalo Bills, second-year corner Kader Kohu was left on an island against Stefon Diggs, and Diggs took full advantage. He racked up 120 yards and three touchdowns on just six receptions. Ouch.
Miami is still 3-1, which should be good for all Dolphins fans. But even in those wins, Miami’s defense has looked questionable at best. Timely turnovers in a close 24-17 win over the New England Patriots is what saved the day.
Its defense really only got one stop against the Los Angeles Chargers at the end of regulation in Week 1; the defense did a good job against the Denver Broncos in Week 3, forcing some turnovers, but still gave up a lot of yards.
Granted, against Buffalo, the Dolphins were missing a couple of starters. Jalen Ramsey is still yet to suit up after being traded to Miami during the offseason. There is help on the way, but I am not sure how much one man can be. Something has to change.
Vic Fangio has to figure it out. Plain and simple. Miami’s offense is a masterclass, but not invincible. A couple of turnovers in plus territory and Buffalo’s ability to turn those into touchdowns is what really separated the two teams today. The numbers for today were actually really close, which is encouraging from a future perspective.
Nevertheless, Fangio needs to clean up his act. They need him to be the defensive genius that he was supposed to be.
The Dolphins might have to be buyers on defense before the trade deadline. Who would their target be? I haven’t given too much thought but might have to soon. If Fangio can’t get the defense straight, it’s going to be an interesting season.
