Van Jefferson was the Rams’ 2nd round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was a talented receiver coming out of college, but it just hasn’t translated to the NFL yet. However, he only just finished his rookie season, so he has plenty of time. It’s not really Jefferson’s fault that he didn’t produce, as the Rams already had quite of a group of WRs last year and they seemed to get better this year too. Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods took most of the workload for the Rams on the receiving end. This hasn’t fazed Sean McVay’s opinion of Van Jefferson though, despite only having 19 catches for 220 yards and 1 TD in his rookie year. He believes the future is still bright for the young receiver. Full quote provided by ProFootballTalk:
“You can see he’s really put the work in,” McVay said, via Lindsey Thiry of ESPN. “He’s come back establishing himself as a legitimate dude, a guy that we’re counting on for big things and I think the future is so bright for this guy.”
While Van Jefferson is now only a 2nd-year player, it might be more difficult for him to produce all that much more than last year. The Rams added DeSean Jackson to Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. The Rams also drafted a WR (for reasons unknown) in Tutu Atwell. However, that guy is smaller than me, so it might not matter. However, the addition of DeSean Jackson might limit Jefferson’s opportunities. But, there is still plenty of his career left. Sean McVay isn’t worried, and he will progress and produce soon enough.
