Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay Detail Matt Stafford Trade

From being on the same staff in Washington to battling it out for the NFC West title, Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay know a thing or two about competing against one another. The Rams and 49ers have been consistent threats in the NFC since the two young head coaches took over. However, Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay found themselves battling over something during the offseason, former Lions’ quarterback Matt Stafford.

Shanahan recently joined Peter Schrager and McVay on the Flying Coach podcast to talk about San Francisco’s Super Bowl run in 2019, trading up to draft Trey Lance and of course, the race to land Matt Stafford. McVay poked some fun at his old friend by asking him what he thinks about the Rams’ newest quarterback.

“You don’t want to get me started, dude,” Shanahan responded. “That was frustrating. I was in Cabo. I was studying it all. … I remember looking through it because everybody was telling me it was a possibility. Stafford’s the man. I studied him hard coming out of college, and you always play against him, so you know how good he is. But to know he might be available and to spend two weeks really watching him, Sean, yeah, he’s better than I realized.

Both Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay were in Cabo at the same time scouting, analyzing, and trying to make a decision on Stafford. Shanahan details how fast the trade happened and how the Stafford sweepstakes were over in the blink of an eye.

“… I remember Saturday I was so stressed out and finally we talked to someone, it was seven at night, and they’re like, ‘No, nothing’s happening (with a trade) at the earliest until tomorrow, so you can finish your night.’ So I’m like, alright, I’m done. I put my phone down, talk to Mandy. I’m like, alright, ‘Let’s go out to dinner, let’s have some drinks.’ Half an hour later, my buddy calls me and is like, ‘I’m just telling ya, if you want Stafford, you need to get a hold of him right now.’ I’m like, ‘What do you mean? We just talked to people. I can sleep on this. We’ll talk to them tomorrow.’ ‘I’m just telling you, you need to talk to him right now.’ And then it was all over.”

As we know, the Rams traded Jared Goff and a couple of first round picks in exchange for Stafford during the 2021 offseason. There were many teams rumored to be going after Stafford, and while the 49ers were one of those teams, it was reported they never made an official offer to the Lions. In my eyes, the 49ers had a better package to offer than the Rams. If I am the Lions, I deal Stafford to the Niners in exchange for the #12 overall pick and another first. In that scenario, the Lions could draft a rookie QB with their #7 pick and get another starter at #12 all while not eating Jared Goff’s ridiculous contract.

I guess Shanahan’s analysis and studying of Stafford won’t be used for nothing as he now has to face the former number one overall pick twice a year.
