UFC Vegas 27 Preview

The UFC is back at the APEX in Las Vegas for UFC Vegas 27, headlined by an explosive Bantamweight main event between Rob Font and Cody Garbrandt. This is a 6 fight main card, which we all know this writer isn’t a fan of, but we are going to get after all 6. Let’s not waste any more time and get right into the UFC Vegas 27 preview and prediction.

Jack Hermansson x Edmen Shahbazyan (Middleweight)

Conventional wisdom should have you picking Edmen Shahbazyan due to the fairly large age difference between the two fighters. Shahbazyan is also just a much quicker starter of the two men here, but you can not dismiss Jack Hermansson and his ability to get a fight to the ground and work for submissions. We need to see more development out of Edmen, but I think he takes that next step and rises up the Middleweight rankings with a win here this Saturday. Shahbazyan via 2nd Round TKO

Ricardo Ramos x Bill Alego (Featherweight)

This is probably my lock of the night between Ricardo Ramos and Bill Alego. Ricardo Ramos is probably the faster of the two fighters, but he is lacking size and punching power here. Alego has the advantage in almost every other aspect of the fight. The nerves might cause Alego to come out a little slow, so if the fight ends inside one round it can go to Ramos, but I predict Alego weathers a storm and finds his rhythm and outpaces Ramos to a victory. Alego via Unanimous Decision.

Felicia Spencer x Norma Dumont (Women’s Featherweight)

The third fight at UFC Vegas 27 is another one that should have a pretty clear victor between Felicia Spencer and Norma Dumont. Dumont, I would say, is the better striker between the two, being able to put together quick combos and good hand speed, but her last outing against Megan Anderson did not look very good. Where Felicia Spencer holds the advantage everywhere else this fight can go. If her chin can keep up, I see a pretty dominant outing by the Canadian Spencer here. Spencer via 3rd round submission.

Justin Tafa x Jared Vanderaa (Heavyweight)

This fight is unique to pick because there’s a lot to consider here. Justin Tafa is young and 4-2 in the UFC so he has a lot of room to grow. He has a solid foundation of good leg kicks and a good counter game. But Jared Vanderaa usually does not give his opponent time to counter because he has the pedal to the metal at all times. One of the more wild strikers on the roster, this fight can last 30 seconds or be a war for 15 minutes. No gimmie here, more of a coin toss honestly. I like both guys, but I will lean Tafa because there’s too much potential there. Tafa via 2nd round TKO.

Yan Xiaonan x Carla Esparza (Women’s Strawweight)

Conventional wisdom, again, wants to say Carla Esparza here because she has a clear advantage in both size and UFC experience. A former champion looking to regain her throne is rising back up the ranks. But Yan Xiaonan’s last fight with Claudia Gadelha shows that she can handle herself well against women who are physically bigger than her. Xiaonan is flying up the Strawweight ranks and her camp believes she will definitely earn a title shot with a win here. I think Xiaonan will outpace Esparza here because she is constantly moving and looking to press forward. Xiaonan via unanimous decision.

UFC Vegas 27 Main Event: Rob Font x Cody Garbrandt (Bantamweight)

This will be your fight of the night. Book it. Cody Garbrandt is an athletic freak with absurd punching power and technical boxing. Garbrandt has also been to the top of the mountain before, holding the Bantamweight championship once. The concern for Garbrandt is he is coming off a brutal bout with COVID-19 and his chin has seen better days (but consider this, every man who has finished Garbrandt has popped for an illegal substance after the fight. Take that as you will.) Rob Font is one of the tougher opponents he will face against. Font has improved in every fight he has had in the UFC, just maybe ignore the Assuncao fight…If Font can find his range and keep Cody at distance, he can outpoint him. I don’t see him being able to finish Garbrandt but he does have surprising power. I have a hard time betting against “No Love” so I will ride with him one more time. I won’t be shocked with a Font win here though. Garbrandt via 4th round TKO.
