Zack Martin isn’t the only former Cowboys offensive lineman to retire this offseason. Former teammate Tyron Smith will also join him in doing just that. The former first round pick in 2011 has decided to sign a one-day contract with the Cowboys and will head to retirement.
Ian Rapoport over at NFL Network was the first to report the news:
Smith, 34, allowed 39 career sacks over 14 seasons, which is just an insane number. Even more impressive when you consider he gave up eight of those over at right tackle during his rookie season. During his 13-year career, Smith made the Pro Bowl eight times and made the All-Decade team.
The former USC product inked a one-year deal with the Jets last season. A deal that didn’t exactly go great, but the Cowboys certainly aren’t complaining because they let him go at the right time and collected a comp pick for doing so.
Jerry Jones gave Smith a really nice send-off during the day they honored him:
“We won’t have a player, ever, with the Dallas Cowboys… that shares better credentials on how they came, how they worked, how they used their background to work, and what they accomplished and meant to the team.” Jones said.
“It is a tragedy that we didn’t get a Super Bowl with you sitting out there at that left tackle, and sitting there with many of the other players that you mentioned here today. But that doesn’t take away from the fact of what you’ve accomplished in the NFL Tyron, and that doesn’t take away from the respect that you see in this room.”
