Tyler Glasnow on Rays Culture: “They’re Awesome”

Despite their small market, the Tampa Bay Rays have frequently put themselves among the best teams in Major League Baseball. Some of this is due to excellent scouting and a forward-thinking front office that uses data effectively. However, their team culture may also play a role. Starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow went on the Foul Territory podcast and offered his take.

“They’re honestly just like, come up here and do whatever you want. Just don’t be a d**k. That’s like the only rule. Just do whatever you want. They’re awesome. Certain little things, like this doesn’t happen often, but if you were to be like, ‘I want to go to a wedding.’ I don’t know, something small like that. Maybe not a wedding, but they’re very open to live your life. You’re also a human being, and it’s just the most relaxed environment I’ve ever been a part of.”

In contrast to Pittsburgh, Glasnow believes the Rays culture is one which has allowed him to thrive. The 6’8″ flamethrower continued:

“You and I, Brock [Holt], came from the Pirates. No knock on them, but it was like, very military style, which is really beneficial for certain players. Some dudes do well in that. They love the structure, and I’m just not wired like that. Like obviously you need to be a good teammate, but you gotta have autonomy, and [the Rays] are just good at that.”

After missing most of 2022 recovering from Tommy John surgery, Glasnow is 4-3 with a 3.36 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 88 strikeouts in 61.2 innings pitched. The Tampa Bay Rays are 62-42, good for the second-best record in the American League. They are in good position to secure their fifth consecutive postseason berth.
