Tua Tagovailoa has been voted as a team captain of the Miami Dolphins as the “resounding highest point winner,” per Pro Football Talk.
Tua’s time in Miami has been quite the rollercoaster ride. Getting drafted in the top five, having the worst offensive line in the league and rumors of Deshaun Watson replacing him. Pile on the Dolphins being found guilty of tampering in an effort to add Tom Brady, the team losing draft picks and more for said tampering, and the apparent sense that the team simply did not believe in him. How’s that for a work environment? All of that aside, Mike McDaniel has had a consistent showing of support for Tua since being hired by the Dolphins, and this vote shows that the players of the team are on the same page as their coach.
“I think it says everything. I think that’s incredibly important when it’s done with the right reasons and the right intent. The only thing that I gave to the players was, ‘Who do you want representing you each and every game, who do you want to wear the C and understand what that C means on your Jersey?’ I think it speaks volumes on where he’s at with the team and their belief in him.” – Mike McDaniel on Tua’s captaincy, via Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.
Tua Tagovailoa enters a critical year in his career, as this could be his last chance to prove he is the guy in Miami. Hopefully, this vote of confidence by his teammates is a sign that he is ready to prove it.
The other players that were voted as team captains alongside Tua Tagovailoa for the Dolphins this year are safety (Canadian) Jevon Holland, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, left tackle Terron Armstead, defensive linemen Christian Wilkins, and cornerback Xavian Howard.
