The Tua Tagovailoa haters are shaking their fist this morning. Yes, I am looking at You, Aarav.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins are expected to keep Tagovailoa as their starter entering 2023. This report shouldn’t really be a shock based on how well he was playing. In 13 starts this year, Tagovailoa threw for 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns to only eight interceptions and posted a 68.6 QBR. It would seem that first year Head Coach Mike McDaniel and the higher ups have been pleased with the development they saw. It’s incredible what having a coach who believes in you can do for your confidence and growth.
Sadly, this season for Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins will likely be remembered for how they finished down the stretch and the two concussions Tagovailoa suffered. The Dolphins five straight after starting the year 8-3 (8-1 with Tagovailoa as starter) and barely snuck into the playoffs due to a last second field goal against the New York Jets. With Tagovailoa not playing in their AFC Wild Card game against the Buffalo Bills, we likely won’t see him again baring a huge upset. He is not playing due to the second concussion he suffered this year during the Green Bay Packers game. The Dolphins medical staff have come under fire, rightfully so, with how they have handled both concussions this year, so you can’t be surprised they are taking this one with more precaution.
What’s fascinating to note about the situation with Tua Tagovailoa being announced as the expected starter in 2023 is that he just completed his third year of service, meaning he is now extension eligible. Since he was a first round pick, he has a fifth year option that will need to be decided on this off-season. The deadline for options is May 5th, and if it is picked up Tagovailoa will have a fully guaranteed salary of $22.5M for 2023. Seeing that the Dolphins see Tagovailoa as their starter next year, I would imagine that option does get picked up.
