The Giants just reeled in Brian Burns but was it worth the price of admission? Let’s talk about it. It’s time to hand out some trade grades. Did the Giants or Panthers win this deal? No need to waste any more time but also feel free to comment if you agree or disagree.
This is why you sell at the trade deadline if you’re a bad team. It allows you to bite the bullet on things like this. Joe Schoen landed draft equity in the Leonard Williams trade and the weaponized it for Burns. Had this been the Seahawks second rounder, I think I would have given this an A. Because it’s pick 39 and that should be a really good player in this draft, it’s a B+.
The extension wasn’t cheap but it’s hard to argue against the vision. Kayvon Thibodeaux meet Burns and vice versa. You want to talk about a pass rushing duo? Now that’s a dangerous tag team duo to deploy on game day. Plus, Burns is still very much in his prime.
I don’t hate this deal for the Giants. Too bad they’re stuck with Daniel Jones and it won’t matter. At least for next year anyway.
So the Panthers turned down two first round picks from the Rams so that they could take a second and a fifth from the Giants? I understand those are two different management groups but that’s hard to swallow. Especially because it feels like the Panthers sold low. Burns didn’t have his best year in 2023 struggling to stay on the field with injuries. He only had eight sacks last year compared to 12.5 the year prior. The baseline for trading a player on the franchise tag (which Burns was on) is two first round picks. This doesn’t meet that.
The deal isn’t a total disaster but it’s sure hard to accept if you’re a Panthers fan. For those that exist, I’m sure it’s not easy.
