The Panthers had a chance to trade Brian Burns for two first round picks when the Rams offered it to them a couple of years ago. Instead, they’re going to take a second and a fifth round pick from the Giants after a two win season. Somehow that actually happened. Welcome to Panthers football. Are you enjoying your stay?
Connor J Hughes over at SNY was the first to report the news. Hughes was the first to add in that it’s the Giants’ second round pick which is pick 39.
Burns, 25, was hit with the franchise tag this offseason. It costs two first round picks to sign a player on the tag. Instead, Carolina settles for a two and five. It’s Dan Morgan’s first big move as a general manager. His first was giving Robert Hunt the rights to his first born child. Yes, it was that much money.
It’s important to note that it’s pick 39 going back the other way. The Giants have another second round pick because of the Leonard Williams trade. The Giants have also already gotten a contract extension done for the former Florida State product. It’s a shiny new five-year pact worth $150 million with $87.5 million guaranteed. A tidy piece of business that Joe Schoen got done pretty quickly all in one fell swoop.
Burns also chimed in on the news via social media. I think it’s safe to say that he’s pretty happy right now.
