Trade Grades: Bills Trade Stefon Diggs To Texans

Stefon Diggs was traded to the Texans in a blockbuster deal. Now that the dust has settled and the full details have come out, let’s hand out some trade grades. Who won the Diggs trade between Buffalo and Houston?

Buffalo Bills: Grade A-

Good riddance. For a guy who was traded straight up for Justin Jefferson and lost the game against the Chiefs because of this drop, he sure does love to run his mouth. I can’t believe the Bills got a second rounder here. Especially when you compare the fact that the Chargers got a 4th for Keenan Allen. Buffalo gets off Diggs’ $19 million and got a premium pick for doing so. It’s hard to complain with that given the fact that Buffalo clearly had no leverage and needed to get off the player.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but Diggs has regressed as a player. Last year, Diggs went from 13.2 yards per catch down to 11.1 which is his worst since 2018. He’s lost a step and the numbers don’t lie. The legs are starting to go and for a frail receiver, it often spells trouble with the hands. In 2023, Diggs had eight drops and two fumbles. That’s not including two more fumbles during the playoff run. He also went 11 straight games to close the season without registering 90 receiving yards. He had no fewer than five targets in any game and multiple contests with at least 12.

If you still think Diggs is an All-Pro receiver, I’m not sure what to tell you. This isn’t much different than when the Falcons got a second rounder for Julio Jones . Diggs is 31 now and he’s on his last legs in terms of being a premium target.

The only reason why it’s not an A+ is because Buffalo also gave up two late round picks. Something they can get back by trading down once this year. It’s hard not to love the way Brandon Beane handled this. They got 80% of Diggs for a reduced cost by adding Curtis Samuel. They’re also in position to draft another receiver and should get a year two bump from Dalton Kincaid. Also, I’m not sure who needs to hear this but Mack Hollins might be an upgrade over Gabe Davis. Job well done by the Bills. The only part that sucks is they can’t build a time machine and just insert Justin Jefferson on the team. Something that may have cost them a Super Bowl.

Houston Texans: Grade D

Don’t get me wrong, I understand why the trade was made. I just don’t agree with it. In no way, shape, or form am I adding Diggs on that contract while giving up a second rounder. That’s a non-starter for me. However, I get why it was done. CJ Stroud is still on his rookie contract, which allows you to make a move like this. In the short term, this move probably helps them. Long term, not so much. I’m going to get more into this when I do the fantasy football reaction. Stay tuned for that.
