Trade Grades: Bills Add Amari Cooper From Browns

The Bills watched the Jets land Davante Adams and they quickly responded. Amari Cooper is on his way to Buffalo in exchange for a third round pick and an additional pick swap. We already did a trade grades post for the Adams deal you can read it here! Now let’s hand out grades for the Cooper deal!

Buffalo Bills: Grade B

I think the Bills did fine here. It was obvious they needed another receiver here and didn’t pay a huge price to land Cooper. It also helps that they landed a second round pick for Diggs so really it’s a nice trade up in the draft.

It’s hard to judge the way Cooper has played this year given how terrible Deshaun Watson has been. Eye test wise, it looks like Cooper has plenty left and he’s coming off a 1,250 yard season the year prior. He’s certainly a reliable route runner and immediately becomes the team’s top receiver.

This is a solid get for the Bills. Giving up a third round pick stings a bit but this was needed. Keon Coleman isn’t quite ready for primetime yet and the team was counting on Mack Hollins to be something special. Curtis Samuel and Khalil Shakir aren’t anything special either. During those gotta have it moments in the playoffs, Cooper will be counted on.

It’s hard to hate this deal for Buffalo with the obvious elephant in the room being this front office and coaching staff could be shaken up if they fall short and have another epic collapse. It also helps that the Bills will be paying Cooper $782K to play out the rest of the season. They can recoup the third round pick back if they lose him in free agency.

Cleveland Browns: Grade B

If you factor everything in, not a bad piece of business by the Browns. They gave Dallas next to nothing when they acquired Cooper the first time around. They got 2.5 years of solid production and they sold him for a much higher price. Given how outrageous the wide receiver market is right now, you wonder if the Browns could have gotten a touch more. Either way, still good business to get Cooper for a third when they gave up next to nothing to get him from Dallas.

The Browns need to start the teardown and this is a good place to start. Honestly, it feels like everybody wins in this deal. The Browns get a nice pick, the Bills get a number one receiver, and Cooper gets to be away from Deshaun Watson. Who can complain about this one!
