Tottenham To Sign Dutch Center Back Micky van de Ven

Tottenham is set to sign Dutch center-back Micky van de Ven from Vfl Wolfsburg, Fabrizio Romano reported early Friday morning. Spurs will pay a €50 million ($55 million) transfer fee to secure the 22-year-old’s services. He will sign a five-year contract with the club, keeping him at Tottenham until 2028.

Van de Ven began his career with Dutch side FC Voldendam. He came through the club’s youth system before becoming an important first-team player. He recorded 48 caps for Volendam in his two years there as a professional and served as the team’s captain.

Wolfsburg was quick to snap him up, signing van de Ven from Volendam in 2021. After a relatively slow start to life in the Bundesliga, he became a regular starter for Wolfsburg despite his young age, playing as a left-sided center-back. He had 33 Bundesliga caps and helped Wolfsburg to an eighth-place finish in the league.

What stands out most about van de Ven is his physical attributes. The Dutch U-21 international stands at 6-foot-3 and is incredibly strong.

What is most impressive, however, is how fast he is. Last season, he was ranked as the fastest center-back in the Bundesliga, clocking in a top speed of 35.97 km/h. This made van de Ven the ninth-fastest player in the Bundesliga in general, beating out speed merchants like Kingsley Coman and Timo Werner.

This is definitely what stands out the most about van de Ven. His recovery ability is elite as his pace allows him to catch opposition players and make last-ditch tackles when needed. It is rare to find a 6’3″ center back with this much pace. Considering he is only 22, he is going to be able to hone the rest of his game to complement his already superb physical attributes, and he can become a truly elite center-back.

Van de Ven is Tottenham’s fourth new signing under new manager Ange Postecoglou. The club has also signed James Maddison from Leicester City, Manor Solomon from Shakhtar Donetsk and Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli. Tottenham also made Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro‘s loans permanent earlier this summer.
