I put together a little video for the top five rules everyone should keep in mind for your fantasy football drafts. Let’s call it fantasy football for dummies. Let’s call it elementary keys to success. Let’s call it do this or expect to lose. No reason to waste any more time. It’s time for the list.
5: Know Your League Rules
This sounds so simple but most people don’t do it. Ask your buddy if he truly ever studied his league rules and the loopholes within them. If he doesn’t give you an obvious right away then you have your answer. It’s the same thing with life. Chinese Farmer, what’s up? Every league has its advantages and disadvantages. Know them for your league.
4: Be Prepared
Do your homework. By that it doesn’t mean you have to watch every preseason game. It doesn’t mean you have to read every practice report. Just sort of map out how you think the draft is going to go. The signs will always lead you down the right path. Follow them.
Create a plan and follow it. Tell yourself you want to budget X amount of dollars per position and a short list of names that you would like to have. If you’re in a snake draft, grow a set of balls. If you have no balls, keep a short list of three of four names you would like to have in each round. Do you expect to win at your job by not being prepared? It’s the same thing for fantasy football so let me do my job by telling you to be prepared for your draft. Create a plan and execute it.
3: Take Risks
If you’re not first, you’re last. The Ricky Bobby method is the only method because it only matters if you win. We want league winners, not safe picks. Put yourself out there and think about what history has taught us. What young player is ready to pop? Which coaching change matters? Which offseason move matters? Take the big swings that make your friends look at you weird.
Last year mine was Deebo Samuel and I tried to tell you how awesome he was. I can only show a horse to water, not make them drink it. Read the site and keep up.
2: Don’t Take Running Backs On Dreadful Teams
This is the golden rule of golden rules. In the range of outcomes that I’ve been doing this fantasy football thing for, you will lose 95 times out of 100. Do not pick running backs on dreadful teams. It never works. It will never work. If you think a team is going to suck. Do not pick their running back.
Game patterns matter in fantasy. If you own a running back on a team that never has the lead, guess what happens to your fantasy lead? Bye, bye! Guess what? The other team has the running back on the team that just scored. It’s a script that writes itself over and over again. Stop taking them.
1: Be Early & Never Late
Aggressive wins but the early bird gets the worm. It’s always been the case. Ask yourself this question; who will be ranked first next year? That’s your pick for this year. Don’t rank things for this year. Rank them for next year. I guarantee you will be significantly more accurate that way.
