Gavin Lux Is Amazing At Baseball And Not Many Realize It
In this current season of Major League Baseball, many are trying to adjust to new factors. Things like deadened balls and shifts are all culprits, but there is one man who is in another realm currently. And that’s Dodger infielder, Gavin Lux. It wasn’t always like this, though, especially not before 2022.
Let me preface this by saying that Gavin Lux had incredibly high expectations upon entering the Major Leagues. The Dodger infielder was selected in the first round, 20th overall in the 2016 draft. He coasted through the minors, hitting a pinnacle and slashing .324/.399/.514 between A+ and AA in 2018.
The Dodgers decided his time was ready, so they decided to call him up in 2019 as a 21-year-old. Lux wasn’t anything spectacular, hitting only a meager .240/.306/.400 in 23 games played. He did, however, become the youngest Dodger to hit a home run in a postseason game versus the Nats.
This trend continued the following seasons. He would go above and beyond in AAA, and then almost immediately struggle upon being called up. Fans began to write him off, as patience was wearing thin. After all, between 2019-2021 he hit .233/.314/.368 in 532 career plate appearances. Then came 2022.
Dodger President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman wasn’t so keen on giving up on Lux. The consensus was that he needed more playing time. In 2022 they decided upon doing just that.
Gavin Lux has become one of the most productive bats in all of baseball. As of August 15th, he holds a .296 batting average, which ranks him 9th in the National League. His .374 OBP is also 5th in the NL. He also leads the Majors in triples with six and has scored 59 runs.
What’s even more mind-boggling is the fact that Lux only has five home runs on the year. He hit as many as 26 home runs in the minors. He has shown hints of big-time power, but it’s not really his game. Lux is that X-factor on this storied Los Angeles team that may prove to be a difference for a deep playoff run.
The man is only 24 years old and has a huge ceiling. Being in a lineup with veteran stars like Freddie Freeman could definitely be a reason why Lux is performing so well in 2022. I speculate his power will indeed arrive, and when that time comes, the world will know who Gavin Lux is.
