Todd Monken is attempting to be happier than happy. The Georgia Bulldogs just won back to back National Titles and did so with Stetson Bennett as their quarterback. Monken is on top of the world and decided that he would rather be miserable. Monken has agreed to terms to become the next Ravens offensive coordinator and it can only be described as a total crackhead move.
The team has already reported the news:
“The Ravens have hired Todd Monken to be their offensive coordinator, Head Coach John Harbaugh announced Tuesday.”
“We conducted 21 interviews with 14 candidates throughout a thorough process that had wide-ranging organizational involvement,” Harbaugh stated. “Todd’s leadership and coaching acumen were evident from the beginning. He has a proven track record for designing and teaching offensive systems that allow players to succeed at the highest level. We’re excited to get to work and begin building an offense that will help us compete for championships.”
For the record, I do believe Monken is a clever coach. What he did at Georgia should speak volumes. On top of that, he somehow got Baker Mayfield to throw 3,827 passing yards one year which is still his career high. That was with Freddie Kitchens as the head coach… Oh, and in 2018 Monken helped the Jameis Winston led Bucs to third in the NFL in total offense (415.5 ypg). That mark continues to be the franchise high in Tampa Bay history.
Again, I like the hire. I just question why the hell Monken would want to do this to himself? The grass isn’t always greener bro…
In this case, the grass really isn’t green at all. He’s entering a Baltimore situation where Lamar Jackson may or may not be the team’s quarterback. If he is the team’s quarterback, it’s because they have overpaid in a big way to keep him. Overpaying for a broken quarterback that will never win anything regardless of how clever Monken is. If Jackson leaves, Monken has then signed up for an NFL job without a starting quarterback in house.
Only a complete and utter crazy person would leave Georgia for this.
Keep this in mind too. The Ravens have zero wide receivers. There is a real argument to be made that the weapons Monken had at Georgia next year is better than what the Ravens will put out next year. I’m not joking. What’s the gap between Brock Bowers and Mark Andrews? What’s the gap between Arian Smith and Devin Duvernay? What’s the gap between Rashod Bateman and Ladd McConkey? The last one might be a bit of a stretch but you get the point. Monken had access to elite college players. With the Ravens, Monken has access to bottom tier weapons.
You’re signing up to fix Lamar Jackson when Greg Roman did everything in his power to make him semi functional. It’s a total crackhead move unless you were really hungry for some Maryland Blue Crabs. That’s really the only upside to taking this job. You signed up for Lamar and when you’re the guy being blamed when they’re not good enough I just don’t want to hear it. Good luck, Todd. You will live to regret this one. Apparently being showered with confetti at the end of the year wasn’t good enough.
