The Titans are hiring 49ers director of player personnel, Ran Carthon to serve as their next General Manager. Dianna Russini was among the first to break the news earlier today.
Carthon, was interviewed for the job last Thursday in a meeting that included Titan executives and owner Amy Adams-Strunk. Carthon and his 15 years of experience was clearly enough to impress the Titans who have been looking for a GM after firing Jon Robinson for an overall lack in ability to bring in talent. Trading away A.J. Brown surely didn’t help either.
Ran Carthon got his start in the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2004 with the Colts. He would remain on the team until he ended his playing career in 2006.
Carthon then spent 4 seasons as a scout for the Atlanta Falcons, who during that time brought in the likes of Matt Ryan and Julio Jones. He then took a job with the Rams to serve as their director of pro personnel from 2012-16.
He then found himself in San Francisco where he has served as the director of pro personnel for 5 seasons, before being promoted to director of player personnel just two seasons ago. And during his time in those positions, the 49ers have seen tremendous success.
They have played in a super bowl that they were a few plays away from winning. And have played in 2 different NFC Championship games.
And as a result of this success, Ran Carthon has found him being promoted again as the Titans hope he can bring that same winning culture to Tennessee. This is a Titans team that was in prime position to win its division half way into the season. The pieces are there to be a contending team but it’s clear that Jon Robinson wasn’t going to get the job done.
The Titans are at a weird crossroads here. With a few right moves/draft picks, they could easily be a contender in the AFC again. But if they continue down this path and have a couple more mediocre seasons, then it might be down to tear it all down and start over.
The addition of Ran Carthon is hopefully going to prevent the collapse of this Titans team. But it may just be too big of a job for a first-time GM to figure out. I know Titans fans are surely hoping that’s not the case.
