Tiger Woods has arguably been the face of professional golf since he turned pro. When you think of Woods, you picture him in his Sunday red, his domination of the early 2000’s and his sponsorship with Nike.
Well, news broke Monday that Woods and Nike are parting ways after 27 years together. Woods released a statement on his Twitter account Monday morning.
“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” Woods wrote. “The days since have been filled with so many amazing moments and memories, if I started naming them, I could go on forever. Phil Knight’s passion and vision brought this Nike and Nike Golf partnership together and I want to personally thank him, along with the Nike employees and incredible athletes I have had the pleasure of working with along the way.”
Tiger Woods did not mention what apparel brand he would be wearing in upcoming events. Since his return, he has been wearing FootJoy shoes during tournaments. It would be safe to say whatever brand does land Woods, it will be a massive deal and will sure to bring in a lot of revenue for both the brand and Woods.
After all, he generated roughly $500 million during their partnership, as reported by CNBC.com. While he may not see numbers like that again, it’s safe to assume the check will be large.
Tiger Woods and Nike ending their partnership after 27 years really is the end of an era. The old Nike commercials are going to be on repeat today. It will be interesting to see where he signs next, and Vendetta will bring you the news when it gets announced.
