Three Directions for Jon Moxley vs CM Punk to Unify the AEW World Championship

CM Punk and Jon Moxley are set to unify the AEW World Championships. In May of this year, CM Punk defeated Hangman Page at Double or Nothing to become the new AEW World Champion. Shortly after winning the title, he suffered an injury. Punk revealed he broke his foot and would be out of action for the foreseeable future. So instead of stripping the title off of Punk, AEW crowned an interim world champion.

They held a battle royale alongside a couple of matches. Ultimately, Jon Moxley came out on top and has been the interim AEW World Champion. It’s always been known that Moxley and Punk will come face-to-face to unify the titles, but we are getting the match sooner than expected. On this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Punk and Moxley are going at it to unify the titles. There are multiple ways for this to go, but here are three directions AEW can go to unify the titles.

1. Disqualification

CM Punk has made some enemies in the locker room, one of them being MJF. MJF has not been seen nor wrestled since his epic pipe bomb back in June. There was confusion in the wrestling community about whether it was kayfabe or not. During the months after, it has been reported that people who work in AEW have not heard anything about MJF. I believe we are due for the return of the “salt of the earth,” and it can happen during this match.

With both men being champions, I’m going to assume they both have a champions advantage. So, one way to book the match is to have Moxley and Punk battle it out for a decent amount of time but have MJF return and attack Punk in the match. MJF attacking Punk will cause him to win by disqualification. Since both Punk and Moxley have champions advantage, they will both keep their titles. Ultimately, this will set up a triple threat match for All Out.

2. Double Count-out

No one likes a double count-out, but it is in the realm of possible outcomes. This match is too big to be one-and-done on Dynamite. I truly believe Moxley and Punk will meet at All Out in some sort of fashion. Assuming both men will have champions advantage, this is a way to have the match on Dynamite and All Out. Tony Khan, CEO of AEW, made this match for Dynamite because he said there was no keeping Moxley and Punk separated until All Out — these two men just want to fight each other. When you have two men who are so focused on inflicting pain on one another, they forget about the rules.

Jon Moxley and CM Punk are going to be so focused on each other, that the fight will go outside of the ring. Neither man will realize it, but they both will get counted out. Since they both have champions advantage, they both retain their titles. Thus, setting up the rematch for All Out.

3. Double Disqualification

It is no secret that CM Punk has made some enemies while in AEW. Recently, he has taken on a new attitude. It’s not quite heel, but it’s not babyface either. He’s just stating facts and doesn’t care whose feelings he hurts in the process. Punk cut an intense promo last week on Dynamite. In the process, he took a personal shot at Hangman Page. According to reports, no one inside the company knew he was going to do that.

Hangman Page doesn’t seem to like the type of person to not come back at you if you call him out. Also, I think we’re in store for the return of MJF. In this direction, both Hangman Page and MJF get involved in the match causing a double disqualification, ultimately setting up a fatal four-way for All Out.
