Thomas Tuchel Agrees to Manage England

It was announced on Tuesday that former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become the next manager of England, according to The Times

It was reported back in July that Tuchel was open to a return to England to manage the national team. He previously spent more than 18 months as the manager of Chelsea from 2021-2022.

Tuchel’s appointment ends the search for a permanent manager for the England national team following Gareth Southgate’s departure following Euro 2024. Lee Carsley has been the caretaker manager of England since then.

The hiring of Tuchel was a historic one as he will become the first German manager to lead “The Three Lions.” He joins Sven-Göran Eriksson (Sweden), Fabio Capello (Italy), and Carsley (Ireland) as the only non-English managers to have this job.

There are not many more accomplished managers on the market than Tuchel. The 51-year-old German has won numerous awards. Including the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, and multiple Ligue 1 titles with PSG.

This may be his toughest task yet as England has not won a major tournament since 1966. With the 2026 World Cup around the corner, all eyes fall on Tuchel to get England closer to football glory.

It is still unclear when Tuchel will take over the England job. With the October international break coming to an end, his debut will likely come next month when England travel to Greece on Nov. 14 before hosting Ireland on Nov. 17.

Most recently Tuchel managed Bayern Munich for a season and a half. He was hired in March 2023 and departed the club following the end of the 2023-24 Bundesliga season.

There had been talks over the summer that Tuchel could have replaced Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, however, the English side decided to stick with their current boss.

No matter who England hires as manager, there are high expectations and there will be plenty of questions surrounding Tuchel in the upcoming months.
