This Idea Just Might Save Bowl Season In College Football

Bowl Season is dying. It’s just not the same as it used to be under the BCS era. Two things can be true; Bowl Season has been killed for the worse but maybe it was always going to happen. Once guys like Jaylen Smith and Jake Butt suffered career-threatening injuries in non-championship Bowl games, things were always going to change.

The playoff has taken the sting out of Bowl season. It’s never going to be what it once was. What if there is a way to fix it? This idea just might be what Bowl season needs. I’ve been saying this for a while but college football needs to take a page out of European Soccer to save its sport. In regards to Bowl games, it’s exactly what they should do to reinvigorate the meaning of these games.

What if the calendar is all wrong? What if we’re playing Bowl games at the wrong time of the year? What if these Bowl games were used as a launching pad for the following season? What if Bowl games served as an early out-of-conference schedule release for the following season?

Are you picking up what I’m putting down yet?

Yes, there will be complications in terms of getting the schedule to work. Especially when it comes to playing some of the games like how Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium were featured as a big part of those games. Still, moving the Bowl game to the start of the following season would get rid of the problem of early opt-outs.

European Soccer has events like the Community Shield. This is just an example, of course. The team that wins the Premier League and the team that wins the FA Cup play the following season basically out of the gate. Why not do that for the Bowls? Your Bowl game is your Week 0 or Week 1 opponent for the following season. Now that would be exciting and those games would no longer be viewed as meaningless.
