We’re grinding our way through these tight ends as the lead up to the 2024 NFL Draft continues. What should NFL fans make of former Penn State product Theo Johnson? Let’s talk about it in this edition of the 2024 NFL Draft Profile series!
The Windsor, Ontario native checks in at 6-foot-6, 259. The production really isn’t overwhelming. Didn’t talk about him much during the year itself. Finished his senior season with 34 receptions for 341 yards and seven scores. However, his yards per catch dropped from 16.4 to 10.0 as a senior. Didn’t feel that he made a ton of plays after the catch. The year before, he had some crazy home run hits that year.
The crazy part is I thought he’s built momentum during the pre-draft process. Was really good at the Senior Bowl. Maybe really good is a bit of a stretch but his Combine performance put my brain into a bit of a pretzel in a good way. Keep in mind, the Penn State passing attack last year was brutal. Maybe Johnson is a good player and fell victim to it.
Has some good traits to work with. Not sure he’s a pure blocker but he moved the sled well at the Combine. Super athletic guy at that size. Ran a 4.57 at the 40 and jumped 39.5 inches at the vertical. For a tight end, that’s not nothing. Former four star recruit and was thought of very highly in high school. That’s saying something considering most scouts don’t take Canadian football as seriously. Has good play speed and can actually run real routes.
There is some projection involved in this one but I have a 4th/5th round grade on Johnson. Tight ends are so weird and taking the right fliers is half the battle. With Johnson, there are reasons to believe this flier could become fruitful in the years to come.
